CASE 01 · FILE 07/09 VERIFIED
Kapparot
CLAIM
Before Yom Kippur, sins are transferred symbolically onto a bird, which is swung over the head.
MECHANISM
THE LOOPHOLE — ACCEPTED
The bird is replaced by money. The ritual stands; the object changes. NOTE: the reason for the swap is not cost but convenience, hygiene and animal welfare. And the ritual itself has been contested for centuries — Joseph Karo writes in the Shulchan Arukh that it is a custom "that ought to be prevented".
