CASE 01 · FILE 09/09 VERIFIED
Metzitzah
CLAIM
At circumcision, blood is drawn from the wound. In some communities this is done by direct oral suction (metzitzah b’peh); a sterile glass tube (metzitzah b’kli) is the permitted substitute.
MECHANISM
THE LOOPHOLE — IN INTERNAL CONFLICT
Here the loophole is OPEN and not taken: the tube is recommended, NOT mandated, and attempts to regulate have been rolled back. Direct oral metzitzah is a documented route for neonatal herpes transmission. NOTE: the practice belongs to SOME communities, not to Judaism.
