CASE 01 · FILE 04/09 VERIFIED
Mechirat chametz
CLAIM
During Passover, owning leavened bread is forbidden.
MECHANISM
THE LOOPHOLE — ACCEPTED
The bread is sold by contract to a non-Jew before the holiday and bought back after it. The ownership is real for exactly as long as the ban lasts — and that is why it works: the sale counts as legally effective even though everyone knows it will be reversed after Passover.

they sweep the house down to a crumb,
then hide the bread where it will be found,
and hunt it all night with a candle in hand —
thieves on their home ground.
they sell me the bread for a single coin
so it isn't theirs for the holiday.
I never come to take it away,
and they never ring to ask.
WELL PLAYED!
