Every seventh year, land in Israel must be left to rest.
MECHANISM
THE LOOPHOLE — IN INTERNAL CONFLICT
The land is sold, symbolically, for the year. The ban applies to Jewish-owned land — and for the duration of shmita the land is not that. NOTE: the halakhic literature calls the move "a highly debatable leniency"; the argument has run since 1888-89 and is not settled.
